LAWRENCE MCGLYNN
Philadelphia-based Government and Community Journalist

As a grant and fellowship-funded journalist, I focus on the intersection of poverty and local government in Philadelphia. Currently, I accomplish this through a solutions-oriented lens on WPPM 106.5, via two news programs.

The first, People Powered News, provides updates on COVID-19 related information and social movements throughout the city. We present factual pandemic-related information directly from experts, such as epidemiologists, health-care workers, and government sources. We also focus on the pandemic's effect on educators, nurses, and other essential, front-line workers.

I also co-host Hall Monitor, a weekly show focusing on local government. On this show, we combine journalistic methods with institutional knowledge. My radio partner, Dennis Link, is well-acquainted with the city code due to his employment with a city agency. This expertise enables us to break-down complicated legislation, offer context, and provide actionable information to our audience on how to use city legislation to affect change in their local communities.

Throughout the pandemic, we have run numerous stories covering renter's rights, local, state, and federal aid, and hosted legislators to provide updates on government interventions. We have also hosted community members to hear and relay their concerns to the government agencies in the best position to provide assistance and relief.

Previously I was the City Hall reporter for Philadelphia Neighborhoods, covering Philadelphia City Council through attending all City Council and subcommittee meetings. Through this reporting, I was able to report how those in power make decisions that impact the lives of the 1.5 million residents of Philadelphia. Often in the subcommittee meetings, I was the lone reporter in the room reporting.

My goal as a journalist is to continue bringing important stories to Philadelphians in a useful and impactful manner.
